Blew sky high

Post by melthrottlejunky on March 1st 2009, 8:01 am

Im not too happy. I went down to my brother's house over the weekend to help him restore a 1982 vette. That part is going great. I left his house and started to head back home. As I got onto the highway and was getting up to speed my motor blew up as I was Shifting from 4th to 5th gear. I was about 5000 rpm. I dont know what the hell happened. There was oil and anti-freeze all over the place. The first thing I thought is that I threw a rod through the side of the block. I guessed right. I took it to my local speed shop and they did some checking on it to figure out what happened. After tearing down the engine and looking at the parts they found serious piston damage from detination. I asked them where did it come from. They said they ran a test on the gas I was using. (I run 91 octane.) They said I got a hold of some bad gas. So beware of the gas you guys are getting. I always go to the fuel stations that says 100% gas. I guess Im not so lucky. Now that I am done crying, does anyone know of a good after market short block.

I was lucky that my motor didn't blow up with the crap I used. Not all "100% Real Gases" are the same.... I will only use Shell now.

Mick, to be honest with you, I would build the bottem end myself... but if you don't have the time... I would get the Ford Racing 4.6L Aluminator... Thats the shitte!

What is your combo, I imagine it is s/c. Where did you buy the gas? How much power and who tuned it?

Wow Mick that is a rarity. Are you running forced induction of some kind? Like others have asked....are you running someones tune?

My brother and I got a hold of some bad gas a few months ago from a Valero in Broken Arrow....Both cars were throwing codes...stalling...studdering under load...and detonating. We immediatly tried to get the gas out...but with the S197s the gas tanks are sattlebagged under the back seats and the filler neck is at such an angle you cant syphin the gas out.

We made the gas station take our cars to Bob Hurley and drop the gas tank..clean the tank...replace the fuel filter, fuel pump, sending unit, flush the injectors etc etc....cars run great now.

But yes Beware of bad gas and ethenol....go to a gas station that uses computers to know the level of their gas....if they are some privately owned station odds are they are not checking the levels..and or they use a "stick" to check the level in the tanks. WATER is at the bottom of all tanks by the way.

So can you give us a little more information Mick? What combo are you running.

Also if I were you I would take this opportunity to go with either a crate motor (forged internals) or build it yourself.

Do some research regardless. Modularfords.com and S197forum.com have some great information on builds

It sounded like you were making a general statement, I was making a general comment. There are some factory forced induction mustangs.

If you get it installed by a dealer, it would have a warranty, wouldn't it? Either way, sucks that it happened. At least now he gets a chance to beef it up a little with some forged parts.

And like I told you on the phone 2 minutes ago.....hehe We are talking about an 08 GT not all mustangs in general. You took a different interpretation of the subject matter and generalized something isolated to a specific topic.

08 Gts are not GT500s applause Wow I feel intelligent now

David.. Are you being a smart ass? My question is why is he looking for an aftermarket block instead of having the dealership warrenty the block and get a new one from ford. That is what i was trying to say

lol!

Smart ass? I would never be a smart ass to you bro. cheers We just don't see many motors throw rods out a block here without something aftermarket being the culprit.

werd I run QT gas I havn't had any problems and I'm not to hard on the car.

Your options are build it your self, have someone build it, or DSS Racing or ford aluminator.

What ever motor you put in check the intake for metal or the S/C for damage I have seen the 4.6 put metal back in to the intake or the S/C

2008 gt with blown engine

Post by melthrottlejunky on March 2nd 2009, 8:40 pm

Hey guy's. Thanks for the concerns. I have a Kenne Bell 2.6 running 10 lbs of boost. It has the "KB" tune. My local speed shop did a dyno on it and everything was find and running perfect from the git-go. I was running 435 h.p. to the back tire. I have a friend that works for another speed shop and he said that stock GT engines cant take much more than 475 h.p before they let go. I guess my luck has ran out. I do drive the card hard at times and I have hit the rev limmiter a few times. I guess when I got the bad gas the was the last straw. But I was planning on getting a stronger motor anyways but not this soon. My GT only has 12,000 miles on it. Has anyone heard anything about ford's Aluminator short block?

The aluminator is the way I would go. For the money you would be hard pressed to have one built that way.
