Broken Valve Cover Bolt - Replace bolt or whole cover?

Post by Uncle Banjo on March 25th 2009, 10:29 am

Hey guys! Me, Joshua, and my friend Carl were installing my cams and I over torqued a valve cover bolt. Do I have to buy a whole new valve cover or can I replace the bolt?

More info...did you brake the cover? Is the bolt broken off in the hole? Is it leaking?

The bolt is in the cover and its holding oil but the head came off and is still on due to that littlel piece that prevents the bolts from coming off.

So you overtightened and the bolt head popped off.....in result the bolt is stuck in the head. Its holding oil though.

Well its up to you. If its holding oil than it shouldnt hurt anything. BUT I would still get that bolt out of there.....your cam cover doesnt really need ALL the bolts on...but its recommended.

I would look into replacing the bolt. Did you break the cam cover itself?

Yea! But the bad part is, is that I have to take it to Greg to get it timed and he will have to re-open the cover to inspect the cams and timing! LOL! So when he gets the cover off, will I have to get new covers or just that bolt?

You should have enough left to get a vice grip or something to remove it and replace the bolt. Got a pic?

Bj - Hey Joshua, how much am I supposed to torque these? SNAP! lol

Yeah we can get the bolt out pretty easy by just taking the cover off and using vice grips. BJ go to ford and see if they have a replacement bolt or something. It should be cheap. My manifold bolt was 9 dollars.

Vice grips should do the trick if you have enough bolt to work with

If the vice grips don't work... I know a excellent welding trick... but you have to be good at welding or you will fk something up!

It turns out you can just replace the bolt. Didn't cost much and should be easy to get out. We are going to do this tomorrow.
