Topic: HELP!!! Intake Valve Discoloration, anyone have experience running terrible

Post by ruger311 on April 6th 2009, 2:32 pm

Well to start things off the car is a Dart IE 347 JE pistons, Scat crank, Scat H Beams, RHS 200/64s, Comp XE 282 HR, HP Stg 3 T76 @ 11#s
In early feb the car ran fine dynoed around 600rwhp at local club dyno day, first day at the track ran 11.2 @ 126 then 11.1@ 131mph,, one thing that is weird on teh 11.2 run i was faster to 1000' mark than the 131mph, so somewhere in the last 320' i made up 5mph???? car ran balls out, just need an auto!
weekend after started the car heading for the track and at start up sounded a lil different and idled a lil higher, figured just needed to swap out crappy plug wires, so swapped them out, got to the track the car cut out in every gear from 4000-6000rpm, actually just stumbled but made it up, ran crappy at the track
drove it home, checked plugs 1-7 were brown and looked fine, #8 was kinda oily and wet looking,, swapped plugs ran it around the street approx 6 miles, pulled plugs 1-7 looked great, #8 was a bit oily again, checked compression all holes were 142-145# so were testing good, pressured up on cooling system found no leaks
this weekend i pulled the intake off to find that #8 valve from where the stem tapers to the neck then goes flat all of that has turned a lil blue/purple color,,, this is on the INTAKE not exhaust,,, the other 7 valves look the same,,,,,has anyone ever seen this before?? dont really wanna pull heads but looking like i am going to have to..
here are the pics,, i know i have a lot of extra rtv on the water jackets but least they didnt leak, #8 is the farthest to the left,, the light light blue color on the valve was from me trying to use a flashlight to get a better pic, it is actually a metallic blue to purple color

Burnt?? dont think it is bent but cant really say that since i havent pulled them yet, just by naked eye
thanks in advance

already posted it up there, just waiting on them to approve my membership

thinking a lower intake gasket letting the intake suck a lil oil in and burning on the valve

compression checked out so dont think i have a bent valve, and i think rings are good too

not a big deal,, thanks for posting it up

talked to my engine building machinst, he thought might have been rings but not that b/c comp checked fine, he thought it was lean, i can see that, but still no reason for oil to come into intake, unless intake gasket is screwed or valve guides/seals are going bad

They are rolling in with ideas, hurry up and get in there to answer some questions. :) Some say cylinder head issues!

If the leakdown test shows good compression then I would have to suspect a valve seal or possible worn guide allowing oil to penetrate the chamber. Have you noticed any smoke from that side of the exhaust or more than usual oil consumption?

Was the wet plug oily or more wet with unburnt gas? Does it (the plug) smell like gas or burnt oil?

Is there any visible wear on the valve stem?

been posting everything up on yellowbullet, will update this tomorrow, pulled the head on that side, cylinder walls look like fresh honed walls, valve actually a light grey color, the led flashlight made it look blueish

did not do a leakdown, can always put head back on retorque and then decide,, going to go through the heads and see if anything looks weird or doesnt mic out,,,,

leaning towards the lower intake gasket right now

pulled the head off, everything looks fine to the naked eye, the #8 piston has a lil more carbon buildup on it as well as the matching head,

the valve that is "blue/purple" is actually a light grey colored, looked blueish in the light i was using earlier, the rest are a lil darker,

the cylinder walls look like they are fresh honed, no gouging or anything other than good looking walls

here are some new pics
