Yeah, it looks good but geeeez is it slow!

Post by 08STALLION on May 28th 2009, 11:13 pm

Well the title speaks for its self. With the addition of the 20" wheels I've lost what little power I gained with the mods I've done. So, it's time to ask for help. It's a 2008 4.0 5spd and here's what's been done so far; computer redone by hand, including throttle response time reset with the "drive by wire", duals with VR race mufflers, port-n-polish, K&N. Guys, I know it's a V6 but the wife's little 4cyl swede car blows it AWAY! I want to avoid turbo, s/c, nos, I want real honest power that will keep it a daily driver, reliable, and get DESCENT mileage. Also, I'd like to keep whats left of the 100k warranty it came with. And remember, my daughter gets this in 2 years so it has to be kid friendly.
Open to suggestions!

good lord how is it going to be faster if you dont do any real upgrades. remember if you want bigger explosion in the cylinder has to be more air and fuel of some sort

I know but im still going for streetable, it's my daily driver and going to be the same for the kid. I dont want to hand over ridiclous power right off the bat. There has to be a way to get more power without going THAT far.....i hope. lonely

I would upgade the k&n to full CAI. Once you get the air flowing in, you could then uprgrade and get a set headers to help get the air out. You could also look at making the car lighter. Thats all my ideas without going to boost or NOS.

Jimmy, if you're going to give it to your daughter in two years, I'd leave it alone (to keep it 'kid-friendly'). Then get yourself a GT. If you're worried about gas mileage, check this out: my new GT still has less than 1K miles on it, and I'm getting darn near 20 mpg already (19.7 as of this morning). You can do minimal mods on a GT and get the power you want. thumbsup

CAI & Under-drive Pulleys would be a start, the pulleys are not that expensive. Gears would help a lot but if you are looking to turn it over to your daughter, might not be such a great idea.

All great ideas, I think were going to do the CAI and headers to start with, maybe the under-drive, but I'll prob leave the rear gears alone for now. Maybe after she gets it and proves she can drive AND take care of it I will step it up with a turbo and some more goodies.

Gears. If it's a stick throw some 373s in there. It will help accelerate the car faster. Then I would do a cai and car specific tunes from brenspeed or Bama chips. Best bang for your buck is the gears.

I will say with the addition of a centrifugal or X charger roots blower on the car...it will be as fast as a stock GT. And I see plenty of young girls sporting GTs.

Just a thought

Other than that....there are vendors that have CAI and tuner combinations.

The gears don't add any power they multiply what's already there. Since I have a sixer in the stable myself that I have driven a couple times I would say gears and cai with good tunage would make it lots more enjoyable.

Benji at Bob Hurley Ford does it on the side...after hours...$200 for the install.

I would also look into a JLT CAI with handheld tuner purchased from Brenspeed or Bamachips with a custom tune

Is yours auto or stick?

No preferred company....just make sure they are FRPP true ford....dont buy the MOTIVE brand. Yes Motive is cheaper but harder to setup and a lot of times WHINES out back if not installed correctly.

What gears do you have currently?

save your money, no use buying headers and mods for a v6 that your gonna give to your daughter. spend 700.00 probably less call dave at nitrous outlet get you a system that you can take off the car when u give it to your daughter and put it on your new gt. thats the best bang for the buck and a 75 shot will give you more power than all the mods you spoke of and car would run longer than your gonna own it if you sprayed a 75 shot 2 or 3 times every time you got in the car.

hummmm...tempting, but PRETTY sure ford wont like that warranty wise. Think im going to do gears, CAI, pullys, and a tune. Then well see what she has and what she needs.

Instead of adding gears to your rearend I would suggest replacing your rear axle with a 8.8 that has a t-lok then install 3.73's. Rearend $350 + Gears $150 + install $200 this is also an added safety benefit of having both wheels providing power. I have the Cobra flange you'll need to use your current driveshaft I have done this to mine if you want to try it out first.

8.8's are the new 9 inch as far as demand goes. ford has always been good about putting more than enough beef in their differentials for the power supplied. id put a Ford 8.8 up against a Chevy 12 bolt any day.
