Garage Floor Epoxy Coating...Need some help BMMC

Well its fresh concrete....so no oil stains as of yet. I would like to keep it that way!! Looking to not only protect the garage floor and make it easy for cleanups...but add a little something extra to the "Man Space"!!!

I dont even know where to begin. Anyone know of a good epoxy to put down? Also some instructions on how to apply would be nice!

And if anyone has any garage suggestions....please feel free to post them.

Im also looking for ideas on maximizing space and storage.

"Hello,

I am a resilient flooring installer. I have had this discussion, at various times while on the job. There has been a few schools of thought and varying of opinions. I think most of my colleagues like VCT. I feel comfortable saying in my professional opinion, I would go with VCT, and I intend to when I have my garage built.

I would definitely recommend what we call "cutback" glue. It is asphalt base and if any residual moisture, especially snow imbedded in tire treads, settles upon the floor and eventually between the tile joints, the moisture will not breakdown the glue as it will definitely do water based adhesives. You will not find this adhesive (S-89) on the shelves of most home improvement stores. It may be available special order at Lowes and the likes, but I know you can get it from an Armstrong distributor. We do not use it as much as we did years ago because of it's so-called environmental issues and probably more so, it's odor. I can not think any benefits the latex based adhesives have over cutback other than there mild odor.

As far as making the floor non-skid, you can purchase VCT from a few manufactures with imbedded materials in the tile to create a non-skid surface, i.e. bits of glass or sand. These tiles are tougher to cut and wear your knife blades considerably, but they do offer more traction over basic VCT, though never expect a completely slip free environment. Unfortunately though your color choices are quite less.

you can build that workstation for about $50 and it will be thicker and last longer than a store bought one.... as far as the floor surface... it is simply deciding on a color and/or design (using tile or epoxy and with or without flakes) and applying it...

my nieghbor in Puerto Rico has his done with concrete but it was tinted to a light redish color with some black rock in it. I have no idea what they used to seal it but i know it is thick and clear. My dad has ceramic tiles in his garage in Puerto Rico. They are large in size. larger than a square foot in dimention. easy to clean. i know... made a few messes on it when changing oil. Have to use a rubber mat or a small pices of plywood when using a jack or stands. don't want to crack the tiles. Dad would kill me.

I know David C. would have a bit to say about the paint on applications like he has in his garage. As for making a bench if you need I have plenty of experience making benches. Will be much cheaper to buy lumber and make your own. Then all you need is a decent tool box and at least one cabinet to store paint and cleaners and your set. Let me know when your ready and I'll be happy to lend a hand.

I got mine from this place: http://www.ucoatit.com/pgs/main.htm . They have lots of color and texture choices. Mine has peeled away from the concrete in places - I prepped it just like Ucoatit said, but it still peeled away from the front edge by the overhead door where ice collects in winter. Over time, the abrasion of the ice lifted off the coating from the floor. I'm not sure how to prevent that, but I'm thinking that sandblasting the floor in addition to washing it with muriatic acid per their instructions might help to roughen up the surface and give the epoxy coating enough to adhere to, in addition to giving it more of a non-slip finish. I've got a sandblasting kit that can be used with an air compressor; you just buy bags of sand from Home Depot for use with it. I like the coating for ease of cleaning (it washes off easily); spills wipe right off; looks better than plian old concrete: and another benefit is that it adds light to the garage (higher reflectivity than regular concrete floor). Jerry's wanting to do a coating in his garage, too - I'll be glad to help with any of this; might give me some tips on how to re-do mine in the future. This is a labor and time-intensive job, so don't be afraid to ask for help!

I think Chris 427R has done his with either Ucoatit or Rustoliom (spelling?). Said the first coat does not to adhere to well...but after his second coat in 2 years...its stays on the floor now.

How much does this stuff cost?

I did an estimate for you of 500 sq. ft., new concrete floor, plain (non-high gloss) finish, no decorative flakes and it's $249.95. I think using the diamond grinder first, followed by muriatic acid wash, would do the trick in helping the coating to adhere on your floor. I think that would work great on mine, too - I should probably use the grinder on the whole floor, then re-coat it - that would prep it really nice for a second coat. Jerry would be wise to use the grinder on his as well; especially since it's a used floor and probably has some oil stains on it.

Yeah, that estimate was with Ucoatit. If you go high gloss with decorative flakes, that will about double the cost. They've got a beige color that, with the decorative flakes, looks like it would be close to the picture you've got.

Which tiles? VCT? Plastic interlocking? or ceramic like in the Florida homes?

I can't help but think that any type of interlocking tiles would lead to a horrible mess underneath in a short while (think cars bringing in snow and ice chunks with salt mixed in that drops off the vehicles in the garage, then melts and flows underneath the tiles). I won't be convinced that there's an interlocking tile flooring system out there that's leak-proof.
