help my feet are cold

Post by Psycho Bob on October 12th 2009, 1:01 pm

so it's been a bit cold lately and i have no heat coming out of the floor vents nor will air come out of the "face" vents. the only thing that works is the vents when the a/c is on and every other setting comes out of the defrost. i'm sure this is a pretty common issue. so anyone with the fix???

Never heard of that on these cars. Sounds like a bad switch or HVAC control unit.

Sounds like a vaccumm line. I'm sure you have but check to make sure all your vaccum hoses are well connected. Other than that don't have the foggiest clue. David M might. He has owned a butt load of the fox bodies.

I beleive there may be a cable that goes to an arm that diverts the air when you slide the settings. I bet the cable or arm is malfuntioning.

Yes. It should be cable operated it opens the passageway from the heater core for air to blow through the vent tubes. The cable could have come off the clip on the back of the dial (cold hot) or it could have come detached from the heater core door. Or the cable could be broken. There might be vacuum controls too on the 86 I can't remember. I bet it's that cable though. If not the heater core might be bypassed of clogged so bad it's not getting hot. I'm assuming the blower motor is working and blowing air?

If it's a fox. It's probably the cable or bad connection on the switch or vacuum line. In any case you're gonna have to dig into the dash. At least the center section.

There is also a high-hat style vacuum valve on the passager side underneath the dash (should be able to sick your head underneath and see it). Look for the heater core casing.... There should be a vacuum line connected to the valve. This vacuum line often come disconnected or leaks.

Good luck!

blower is working for all settings. also it does change between defrost and vents, but only when it's put on a/c. it is getting hot so heater core is fine. if the cable is messed up wouldn't that keep it on the defrost only and not be able to change between that and a/c. the vents don't work when it's on "vent". it blows out of the defrost unless it's on a/c.

I think if memory serves that the cable only adjusts the hot cold knob. The Settings knob AC/Vent etc is vacuum Operated. The knob cluster for HVAC controls has some vacuum lines running off the back I think Yellow White and Red tubes. I can't remember off hand where each tube goes but I would gather that the red is for hot and the white is for cold and the yellow may be the vacuum source line? Anyway I bet you'll find that somewhere in there is a leak or broken line. Could be the top hat thing Paul suggested. Its just behind and left of the glove compartment. If you swing the glove compartment door down and use a light you should be able to see the vacuum lines and where they go. Im trying to remember the 86. Can you post some pictures of the console and HVAC controls It may jog my memory.

so started looking yesterday and found a Y with only the two vac. lines that go back under the dash connected. the one that looks like it goes into the engine compartment has no tube on it at all. i'll see about a picture today.
