Swapping GT500 suspension over to my GT Mustang

Post by KevinGT on October 16th 2009, 10:36 am

I think I am going to swap out my stock GT suspension with the Ford GT 500 suspension. Since my engine was replaced and a heavy block was used my car now weighs a couple of hundred more pounds. I also have the Whipple on there as well. I am not looking to improve handling as mush as raising the front of the car. I know the GT500 suspension is not a real big performance upgrade but should help account for the additional weight that has been added. I would love to put on a performance suspension but I can have the drop. Does this line of thinking make sense?

The GT500 suspension is not that much different than a stock GT. Heavier springs, thicker sway bar, etc. They making tons of suspension mods now-a-day. You're right a stock GT500 suspension is not all that great. I think their would be a bang for the buck out there.

Paul, I agree but I cant lower the car anymore than it already is. So my problem is how to raise the car which is unheard of in the Mustang world. :)

Ahhh... you had "Can" instead of "Can't drop"....

In that case... All you would really need is the Gt500 springs. And probably only the front.

Maybe Blair or David L have their stock set they would part with ???

Might also look into upgrading to better brakes. Will all that power and added weight. Stopping could be a concern.

What springs do you have on there right now? Might look into a set of Steeda...lowers the car only and 1'', not sure if the GT500 springs would make the car look like a 4x4 up front. Maybe not with the added weight.

Wow this is a fun experiment. Let us know how it works out.

See if you can snag David L's stock springs.

Done, it raised it a little over an inch. Before I could not even squeeze my hand between the tire and the fender well but now I can. I still cant use a standard jack but it is so much better. Ended up using the GT500 springs, struts and shocks since we had them. The car rides about the same but now I am not bottoming out. I am back to 4 inches in the front so that is also a relief. At 650.00 a pop I cant keep slapping the bumper and repainting every year. Especially now that I dont have a paint person. :)

Glad it all worked out for you Kevin. How is the car running? Strong I hope! Are you enjoying the taimer sound of the exhaust?

Pretty nice having peice of mind about the bottom end of the motor. Once I go supercharged...Im going to definitely worry a little about the bottom end every time I get on it.

Did you ever end up upgrading the clutch? or are you still using the stocker?

I haven't done anything to the clutch yet but when it goes out I am replacing it with the P-51 clutch by Roush. The car is running great with the stock 10 pounds of boost and I have the 13 psi pulley standing by.

I need to get other parts of the car in order first. My front suspension will have to be the way it is now but I can put some LCA's on and what ever else goes back there. The bad news is that this mishap has stirred up Mod Fever again so I expect to be selling some toys.

UH OH...careful with the fever, it can have some side effects in wallet area

Some suggestions for you:

1)One piece aluminum driveshaft
2)Fixed Lower control arms
3)LCA relocation brackets (if lowered more than 1'' in the rear)
4)Adjustable Upper control arm
5)Tochico D spec adjustable shocks
6)Bigger Breaks (GT500 Brembo ...economic choice, BAER if you want better stopping power)
7)Eibach Front and Rear Sway Bars
8)Adjustable panhard bar (if needed)

These are just a few off the top of my head.

If you dont want to mess with panhard bars and want a better all around car...might look into the Saleen WATTS link suspension....really cool. Acts like an independent rear.

about the only upgrade-worthy suspension advantage youd get from the gt500 is the strut mounts. if your car is lowered these will help. they are beefier than stock GT ones.
