Leaking oil pretty bad... HELP!

Post by 98tulsaslobra on October 19th 2009, 10:30 am

It looks like its coming out of a hole in the metal thing that holds my oil filter?Any ideas?

Oil filter housing gasket is my guess, unless the housing has a hole in it. If its not pouring out at idle then it doesn't have a hole, most likely the gasket then.

Hard to tell by the pics, but Occam's Razor applies here. Check the obvious things first like the gasket mentioned.

The bad thing about leaks is that they can start 10 ft from where they drip.

EditLooks like you might be replacing the o-rings in the oil cooler...run a search for "oil cooler leak" and you'll find out more info about that particular leak.

You could try to tighten the oil cooler's 1/2" hex/allen bolt first (remove oil filter). This can become loose over time from people (ie - oil change techs) over-tightening your oil filter. You may want to give that a try before you order up all of the o-rings (p/n F6ZZ-6L621-AA ) and tackle this project.

someone just sent me that, anyone think this might help??? Arrrrgh i suck at this stuff.

I would try tightening the allen/head hex bolt first if that doesn't fix the leak, then you will have to order the "O" rings and replace them. You can also go to local mom and pop hardware stores and have them cross reference the part numbers to other O-rings and if they have them on hand they will be cheaper than the ones from Ford.

This happened on my 03 Cobra. A buddy of mine did the work because I thought it was alot more complicated than it was. He ended up getting the O-rings from a small hardware store like I said before and they were like $3-$4 if I remember right.
