shifter movement

My tranny shifter seems to rock back and forth on rough roads.Since jerry's tranny was ok execpt for the block rings,i was wondering if this rocking could be hard on the soft parts of the tranny.I don't know much about the kind of tranny in jerry's car,but on other forums this wear seems common.Does anyone else notice any movement or is my car the only one.I did solve my problem,keep your hand off the shifter while driving on tulsa rodes.

Tony no real idea. Some movement is expected. Bad mount, loose mount ? Just would have to look at it.

Tony... quit trying to off road in you damn mustang!!! The shifter will rock a bit, but if you think its excessive... then you might want to have it checked out!

The problem lies in the design of the shifter in these cars. It's externally mounted to the transmission with arms that work the linkage in the transmission. The bad part is how the other half of the shifter is mounted to the body in the transmission tunnel. The motor moves under load and can have slight movement other times through the mount which is designed to move along with the rest of the drivetrain. The body however where the back half of the shifter is mounted is fixed and will not move. I believe the movement you are getting over rough surfaces is nothing more than these two oposing forces playing out in the shifter due to a lack of anywhere else for the movement to travel.

Did you tighten your handle bolts? Mine were loose

I tend to agree with david,unless no one else feels this.I have went over all the nuts and bolts,but will check the mount to night.It just seems more agressive since the tranny was pulled and the new clutch was installed.I know my old muncie 4sp in the gto does not move.

Found a bolt under the car(6mm)next to the shifter linkage.snuged it down and rocking has went away.The End
