I need a Garage Heater

Post by KevinGT on December 30th 2009, 8:50 am

Can anyone recommend a good heater for my garage. I have a 3
car garage that is drafty and I am freezing while trying to work on the car. I
need something that is not dependant on electricity so if the power goes out I
can still use it. I have seen some Mr. Heater kerosene units that look pretty
good. Budget is 150- 250 range and not sure if kerosene or propane is better. I might hit ace hardware this afternoon but something has to give.

I am in the same process right now. Just havent decided if the kerosene ones are really safe for that? They say they need to vent a little bit, which would mean cracking the garage which would just let the heat out????

I live in a nice house that some idiot built and put the washer and dryer in the garage.....instead of adding a few more SQ feet to the house! Its no fun doing laundry when its 18 degrees out.

Infrared is the way to go. I would try to find a natural gas or propane infrered heater. THe theory behind infrered is it heats whats in the garage vs just heating the air in the garage. they are much more efficient than standard gas or electric heaters.

This is what is recommended for Kevin's garage for natural gas http://www.ultimategarageheater.com/natural-gas-garage-heater/search_response.php?sqft=3_car_garage&garage_height=10_foot_ceilings&insulation=insulation_yes&winter=temperature_60&q=+++

Could it be an option to insulate your garage door better. Our garage doors are insulated and it stay's around 50-55 degrees in this weather. Not for sure if that is an option for you or not, but if not then I would go with the Mr Heater. Seem to work really well over at Paul's.

I plan on insulating my garage and garage door and getting some new weather stripping for the outside. If you have a well insulated garage, it will help the rest of your house too. Air is your best insulator

I had infared on propane.Had to take it down.propane emits water, and it rusted my drill press and car parts.
water would run down the rafters and off the garage doors. It was good for growing-----.Anyway,i think going with natural gas,you would be ok.Now i just fire up the 300,000 btu kerosene heater for 20 minutes, and it stays plenty warm. The shop is 30x30.If i know i will be out there all day,i fire up the ac/heater unit.

I normally build a campfire in the garage. But that's just me.

Me too!!

We just bought a wood burning stove for the shop. Takes about 1 1/2 hours to heat up 2250 sf shop. Burns about two logs an hour, and keeps the shop nice enough to be out there with no coat on. applause

If you pay me, I can just sit in your gargae and just let my "Latino Heat" warm up the place. There must be a pretty woman present for this effect to happen. LOL!!!

I once caught some Latino Heat and it took weeks to get rid of it. Damn and she had such a great personality. :)
