Possible Job opportunity (Srs)
There isnt an opening yet, but once they start hiring people back on i'll have an opportunity working as a CAD Tech in a pipeline industry that caters to Oil and natural gas.
i could start out making an easy $22/hr Health, dental, vision, 401k match and 9 paid holidays plus 8 sick days/yr
Education paid for if its the field your working in.
Only problem is is that they had layoffs last year, but just hired a few people back.
I know a guy there that wants me to work for him.....if i get hired onto this place than my life is set :)
so when the opportunity arises, should i take it? considering the job market out there?

Re: Possible Job opportunity (Srs)
I work in the oil industry and it can be quite rewarding. The downside is that it can be cyclical. I have been lucky to not have missed a day's work in several decades.
Having siad that, I think a CAD tech would be secure in a pipeline company so long as the pipeline company is growing and planning new pipelines. This would be the case more with gas pipeline companies than with oil pipeline companies. You need to research the size of the company, the growth rate of the company, and the future capital expenditures planned for the company. If this all looks good, I say launch!

Yeah as in Williams Brothers
We'll they dont have an opening there, but theres a guy there i know that works there, he used to be my teacher at OSU okmulgee mid America, and he's been wanting me to work for him for quite awhile, I was at the top of his CAD class that he taught and has seen me excel quite well.
The thing is, they had layoffs last year and theres now starting to bring some cad techs back, but there not in a big rush to start hiring again, probably not untill things pick up yet,
But i hope soon

Good company. Pipelines, gas sales, some fiber optics stuff. Well established, good profitable company. My neice-in-law has worked for them for years. Unfortunately Hugo Chavez screwed them and owes them mucho dinero, but that's the cost of international business. Point is, they will not be going out of business and they are a growth company.

Re: Possible Job opportunity (Srs)
Wrong Williams.... Williams Companies and WilBros are two completly separate Companies.
WilBros was the original Williams but split off completely years ago. A good friend of mine is a VP out there. Been there for friggin years. When you see an opening let me know. They are not hiring right though. Just had layoffs...

Re: Possible Job opportunity (Srs)
OK, so I have been out of the US for a while. Willbros still looks like a phenominal company:
http://www.marketwatch.com/investing/stock/WG/profile?siteid=bigcharts&dist=bigcharts&time=8
Profit margin a little low at the moment, but their fingers are in many pies. Lots of CAD work to do. The fact that they were ever associated with the Williams Companies is a big plus too.

Re: Possible Job opportunity (Srs)
FWIW, my dad was a level 5 electrical designer there several years ago. He survived several years of layoffs and eventually fell prey to the ups and downs of the oil industry after 7 years with the company. While most of these companies have their strong periods they can hit rock bottom pretty fast, and he said willbros has a reputation of firing and hiring based on needs at that particular moment. If you are confident in your skills and are up to what eventually would be in house competition I say go for it. If there is only so much work and they only need so many cad techs of your level and pay, be prepared to fight for your job. He also said he would go back to work their but he likes the stability of his current job which is the exact same thing just a different company.

Hmm this one looks like it fits me, Its been awhile since i've used SolidWorks, but it is one of my favorite programs to work/play on.
I have no doubt once i start to use Solidworks again it will all come back to me.
I've known Autocad from release 2005-2010 with 3+ years exp and im getting my 2 year degree this month in design and drafting...its in OKC, if it pays well enough i could possibly move down there...maybe

Re: Possible Job opportunity (Srs)
I don't think I'll ever work for an oil company again. I worked a baker oil tools for 4 years made it through tons of lay offs until the very last one they had
just like someone said. When they're up it's good times but when it's down your screwed. I'd watch out for a company who hires and fires alot.
