Need a computer geeks help

Post by MustangFanatic07 on March 12th 2010, 9:11 am

Here is what i want to do.
Lately i've been having memory issues with a CAD software and it crashes on me

So what i thought would help is to "assign" my software a certain amount of memory so it wont run out.

Is there any ideas on how to go about this

From what i understand, Windows is taking control of how much memory Autocad gets and its kind of like the two but heads all the time on memory

Any ideas?

I'm running Autocad 2010 and its been the biggest memory hog ever. it uses up to 50% of my CPU when im working on simple tasks, I've seen the program use up 700MB, I'd like to assign it to use 1Gb of my memory, just dont know how to do that.

you can go into your settings and give autocad the highest priority. basicaly gives it first dibs on the cpu.

Hey Amanda, what CAD software are you using? I have a freelance project from someone at work that requires SolidWorks or Pro Engineer, sound familiar?

sure does, I've not "played" on solidworks since 2005, man i loved that program, i wish i got back into, was soo much fun. Ive only heard of Pro E, ive heard that it used to be so complex and such, but not so much now, never took a stab at it but it sounds fun.

But yeah im using Autocad Civil 3D 2010, and the fact that it has a civil package makes it worse

thats exactly what i want to do, How do i do that?

part of the reason why Autocad is such a memory hog is that it keeps track of everything you have done in the "undo" command
and you could close out Autocad all together and it would still have memory stored so it can remember how to open it back up again.

I feel that it deserves at least 1GB of the 3.75 GB that im allowed to use.

I did put quite a bit of stress on Autocad, i'm currently at 1.30GB of memory being used with 3.75 GB available to me....does this seem odd to you?

its saying Autocad is running out of system memory, if you continue with this command Autocad could possible crash,
And over on the processes Autocad is taking up 750MB

Amanda... what's the specs of your computer? Processor, mem, HD space... is this your work computer?

Jared has the right idea but, but it has limited effectiveness.

General tips... Looks like you're running XP.... Run defrag if you haven't in a while. It in the control panel under admin or sys performance.

Reboot! A good old fashion reboot can do miracles. Especially if you haven't in a while.

Don't run 15 programs at once. Cad is a hog... the fewer programs you have open the better.

Ok... it specs out good. Shouldn't have any problems running it.

The BOD worries me.... Never good. And since you get regularly I think you have bigger problems. You might have a motherboard getting ready to roll over and eat dirt. Call your help dept and have them look at it. I'd also save/back up all your files.

It started happening the day i got Autocad civil 3d 2010 installed, and in the process of getting dual monitors hooked up.

lol. Yeah you also may want to think about just running one monitor when running the CAD.

Ok, i think the issue with my BSOD is that the 2 1gb memory chips i have are bad.

Signs of bad memory: 1. Starts Smoking, 2. Becomes Moody...
The indicators of faulty memory are legion, but let's start with a few common ones. From the top:

  1. Blue screens during the install procedure of Windows 2000 or XP. This is one of the surest signs of faulty memory.
  2. Random crashes or blue screens during the running of 2000 or XP. Note that heat can also be a culprit in the case of general flakiness like this, so you should test for that possibility too.
  3. Crashes during memory intensive operations. 3D games, benchmarks, compiling, Photoshop, etc.
  4. Distorted graphics on screen. This can also be related to the video card.
  5. Failure to boot. This can be accompanied by repeated long beeps, which is the accepted BIOS beep code for a memory problem. In this circumstance, you cannot test the memory with diagnostic software, so your only option is testing by replacement, either at home or at your computer dealer.

definitly those 2 that are in bold.
but i'm still getting these issues after having installed 2 new 1gb memory chips.
My computer really slows mega down when i hit at 1.35gb of ram. and my CPU goes up to 60% and than everything kinda suddenly stops, and than after that it'll seem like its working again for 5 seconds and i'll move my mouse and everything goes black and and Blue screen pops up.
