Engine. Which way to go.....

Post by OSUALUM78 on November 3rd 2010, 12:02 am

Well,

I'm now entertaining the idea of going with the Aluminator 8:4 and a roots/screw style S/C for my Mach

I need to keep the shaker there, and I know KB is the only one who makes a "kit" to retain the shaker, although the intake idea of the shaker goes away....

But it is technically a Terminator motor, and I have no OEM intercooler

But, any help in thoughts, ideas, or considerations of me going this route would be appreciated

Jared is already helping me..... And thanks for all your help thus far

Jerry, you out there?

I know you will have input to advise me on

I know others of you will have input as well

I know my OEM 3650 will be toast with a lot of HP/TQ, so need thoughts like this on future considerations (tranny example: swap to a T-56 or have someone like D&D build my 3650), etc.

Thanks

I say go for it. If you go easy on the boost until you get a better transmission you should be fine. I would limit it to about 6-8 psi. Either way you will make it a sleeper. A badass one at that.

As far as transmission, probably find one out of a old termi. I am not sure, but I think you could probably find one out of a vette or viper as well. From what I have heard, same thing, just different internals. Greg might be able to give some insight to this.

I dont know personally about the 3650 and what it can hold, but there are a lot of guys on other forums with boost and built N/A motors and dont seem to have any problems...

But you will only have a 5 speed, so find a trans on ebay or around somewhere

If I had the money, i would just do the Terminator setup, that way you are still 4V. Go for a ride in one, it will make your mind up quick!

afco makes heat exchangers for cooling purposes.

The 3650 is weak compared to the likes of the T-56. I am not exactly sure how much HP/TQ it can handle, but with a S/C, I am sure at some point I would be maxing it or exceeding what it can handle.

The Aluminator is offered in 2 versions, both fully forged, both being 4.6L, 281ci, 4V. (1) a 10:1 compression N/A version, is the replacement for my OEM Mach block, except my Mach block only has a forged crank, nothing else forged; and (2) a 8:4 or 8:5 compression for forced induction version, which would be the direct replacement for the Terminators

Either way (and I am going to b/c I do have other options) I am going to retain having a 4V

I have driven a Termi. My good friend in Houston has a 03 10th Anny vert Termi that is mildly modded (~450rwhp). OEM Eaton, maybe a pulley change, X-mid pipe, catback, tune, Roush shifter, etc. Nothing major. It rocks except for that IRS wheel hop. He's been told to get the MM IRS kit by me many times to help against that

i don't know about the 4v's, but unless you'll be going for major boost a higher compression ratio seems to be the way to go for the 3v's. 3v stock comp ratio is (iirc) 9.8:1. if you're wanting to get 20+ lbs of boost a lower comp ratio would be better.

you can keep the shaker with a whipple kb or an eaton. you just have to make a mounting bracket to bolt it onto the supercharger housing. a lot of people cut up the bottom of the shaker to allow air to flow onto the supercharger to help cool it down some. Besides, the shaker doesn't really do anything performance wise. People have dyno'd with and without them hooked up and sometimes see a 1hp difference.

I could see why a shaker wouldn't make any difference on a dyno, you aren't moving. Wouldn't the affects of a shaker be noticed under driving conditions only??

Correct, no affect on dyno, SAE or a "loaded" dyno...... unless you are having a fan create a correlating wind speed shooting at the front of the car...... even then, I have heard, at the factory height, it doesn't pull much or any air, then I've heard that it pulls so much air the shaker is pointless, b/c the air gets rammed in a such a velocity, without having a 100% enclosed air box (OEM nor aftermarket are not this), the rammed air shoots out the fender

anyone ever wonder if the dyno doesn't show any difference because almost every tuner will open the hood and have a fan blowing right over the entire engine bay. also a lot of the time when it does get on the dyno it's not a fully hot engine because of all the time it has to cool down.
