Doesn't it suck when you have to wait...?

Post by BASixxer on December 9th 2010, 7:12 pm

... to hear back from the insurance company when they are trying to decide whether total your car or repair it?

It's been in the hands of Unique since Monday. $3500 estimated damage, all replacement parts ordered, and then a tear-down revealed an additional $2500 in damage, consisting of flattened bumper reinforcement bars, busted bumper tabs, broken foam inserts, and a few other things. Brings damage to almost $6000 on a car that insurance claims is only worth $8000.

I am just at the point where I want to know. Adjuster came out and looked at it again today, and said he should have a decision in the morning. Started looking at other Mustangs just in case, but damn they are high unless you want to get nasty with the mileage. My car currently has 88k miles, and I still owe $4500 on it. So there goes half my budget, leaving me max around $3000 to start over. Wanting to pick up a cash car using some money from the bank, but needs to be an 01-04 5speed with under 100k miles, MAX.

Don't care if it's GT or V6, would actually almost prefer a sixxer so I can swap all my junk over before this one gets hauled off...

Anyone know of any cheap 5speeds? Found a really nice 02 V6 for $5500 on 11th Street, but it's an auto...

Well hopefully it will work out how you want it. V6 5 speeds are a bit harder to find, and also not as good condition. THey werent always owned by people who took care of them, as oposed to GT and Cobras,etc.....

Well, just got off the phone with insurance, and now I have a decision to make...

Damage is coming out to $4469.33. With this my V6 will receive a GT hood and 99 Cobra front. This puts the car very close to total, but insurance is willing to fix if I want them to.

Other option is to let them total it. They offered me $6649.94 for the car, minus a $500 deductible. I have a loan of $4500 remaining on the car, and make $400 a month car payments on it. Got screwed because of my building credit and paid $12,000 for a 9 year old car from Regal motors.

If I total the car, I will pay off the note and then have $2000 remaining to put toward another car. Found a slick 01 GT in OKC for $8995 that I REALLY like, and the dealership already guaranteed me financing. If I put $2000 down, it will make my payments like $150 a month, a hell of a lot better than $400. But instead of paying the car off in 8 months, it'll be another 3 years.

Any comments or ideas?

My car is an 01 V6 Automatic with 90k miles on it. Runs and drives great, just tons of panel replacement needed after hydroplaning and hitting a guardrail. The GT I am looking at is an 01 V8 5-Speed with 62k miles. Also has a lot of modifications to it. Already talked to insurance and I can keep everything that I added to the vehicle as long as I can replace them with the factory parts, installed correctly.

By upgrading from a V6 to a GT, I can probably sell about $1000 in parts, which I could then apply to the principle (or more upgrades).

my 6 got horrible gas mileage for some reason, and most of my V8 5-speed friends got better gas mileage than my V6 auto...

my wife's car was involved in a collision about 4 months ago, and it doesn't feel right either. something in the suspension is off...

I dont think that GT you found is the best deal around. Here are a few I would compare to. Check out the car, price, and mileage.

2002 GT 28k miles http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2002-Ford-Mustang-GT-/270674806184?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item3f0579c5a8#ht_500wt_1182

1999 Cobra Convertible 78k miles http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1999-Ford-Mustang-SVT-Cobra-Conv-78K-PwrTop-18s-Chromes-/290509608945?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item43a3b8d7f1#ht_15159wt_855

1999 GT/Cobra 58k miles http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1999-Ford-Mustang-GT-58k-orig-miles-Cobra-body-panels-/150531378632?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item230c5e8dc8#ht_500wt_1182

1996 SALEEN Convertible 79k miles http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1996-Original-Saleen-Conv-S281-Conv-5-Sp-79K-NICE-CAR-/330502520319?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item4cf37c3dff#ht_37701wt_1165

2007 V6 Kit car...clean. 57k miles http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/2007-Ford-Mustang-Coupe-Custom-Body-Kit-and-Rims-/260705989377?pt=US_Cars_Trucks&hash=item3cb349b301#ht_500wt_1182

These are just some of your options......keep checking around, there are great deals out there on 2005+ cars as well.

I'd have to agree on getting the V8. You'll be more pleased with your purchase, it will be easier to mod, it will retain better value, and as to gas mileage depending on your driving style you probably won't see much difference. You have to use less gas to propel the V8 than it takes for the weaker engine in the V6 has to do with a car of near equal weight also turning that automatic trans hurts mileage too.

Thanks for the links shelby10, but i have to be able to see and drive the car before i buy it. Having it flown in from alaska isnt an option for me...

The 01 i am looking at has a pretty extensive mod list too. Has eibach springs, tokico mach shocks, mach 1 chin and grille, lunar gauges, steeda shifter, 18" chrome mahs, vortech, boost and wideband gauges, mach 1 interior, mach 1000 stereo, and its immaculate in and out.

Well good news!! I called insurance today and talked to them, then called Unique and talked to them, and we decided to fix the car! Total repairs will cost $4495, which is a cut down from what Bill wanted, but he seemed determined to get my car fixed for me... guess that was the cut-off for insurance to pay before totalling....

In addition to repairs, I am scoring an 01-04 GT Hood, a 2001 Cobra front bumper, getting most of the car repainted (Everything but trunk and top of car), smoking the headlights and taillights (just a tad, nothing too dark), and filling in the MUSTANG on the rear bumper.

I am really excited to get the car back, and also relieved that I don't have to sell all my performance parts to get the GT counterparts... lol. First things when I get her back are new tires (still want rims if anyone has any cheap), and getting the suspension installed finally... Then I need to look at installing my gears...

For the most part, it's just going to be nice to be out of the Element and back in a Mustang!
