what amp should I power them with?

Post by Papi on December 2nd 2011, 1:53 am

Hey peeps. I just bought a pair of Kicker 10CVT82 400W 8" Single 2 ohm Shallow-Mount Comp VT subs for the ranger and was wondering what amp should I power them with? Theses are the same speakers that you would buy to fit into the shaker 500 door mounted speakers. Here are the spec.

  • Kicker CVT8 8" Subwoofer Single 2 Ohm 400 Watts (10CVT8-2)
  • Power Handling:

    • Peak Power: 400 Watts
    • RMS Power: 200 Watts

  • Impedance: Single 2 Ohm
  • Frequency Response: 25-350 Hz
  • Mounting Depth: 3-3/8"
  • Mounting Cutout: 7-1/16"
  • Recommend Sealed Box Volume: 0.40 - 1.80 Cubic Feet
  • Recommend Vented Box Volume: 0.80 - 1.20 Cubic Feet
  • Shallow-mount, true high-performance woofer
  • Delivers extreme bass with minimum depth
  • Dark gray modified-spoke cone with bracing for clear bass response
  • Ventless solid-pole design for direct mount to enclosure rear wall
  • Steel clearance adapter plate replaces part of enclosure wall depth to further lessen depth
  • High-temp coil wire
  • Slender, strong steel basket with coil-cooling perimeter venting
  • Durable Spiralead tinsel leads
  • Tough double-stitched surround
  • Special spring-loaded binding posts for minimizing depth

I'm thinking about this one. Kicker-DX500.1 It can go down to 1 ohm stable when I wire up the speakers to parallel for a mono amp.

that would work as long as you dont crank it all the way up. might blow the coils at full power.

Hifonics was the "shit" when I was young. I believe it was the Zeus model that was the big seller. Them 2 amp you picks are really nice ones.

I finally got a response from Kicker.

"Hector,
use a ZX350.4 and a ZX450.2 Use a PKD1 amp kit to power them both. If
you have any further questions let me know. Have a great weekend."

thats interesting that he would recommend those when your speakers max rating is 60w rms per speaker and that amp puts out 90w rms per speaker. same with the subs max of 200w rms each and the amp puts out 225w to each.

im no audio guru but i always thought it was a big no no to put more power to a speaker than the rating says to.

I have JL Audio in my Eleanor and am very happy. I cant help you on amp selection because I always get the Ohm load wrong, running in Parallel and yada yada yada. I call Crutchfiled and get their recommendation and then find the JL Audio amp that has the closest specs. One thing I have learned is peak wattage is for kids. If you have 1000 peak watts, but 60 watts rms then you have a 60 watt speaker.

Buy the brand dont by the wattage level, remember those Rockford punch 45 amps would shake the windows.

I'm going with what Kicker told me to get.I can always lower the gain on the amp and I don't think I'll play them that loud. Pretty much it's going to sound like the Kicker upgrade for the Shaker 500 set up. I'm going with a ported box to get a deeper bass instead of a solid box for harder bass. I'm going to get the ZX450.2 first ans see how that will work for the subs.I have a 4 way amp at home that might work for the other 4 but I think I might be too much. I'll find out soon.
