Dynamat Extreme

Post by KevinGT on November 24th 2008, 12:55 pm

I am debating the idea of gutting the Mustang and installing Dynamat Extreme. I know this will add weight but I am looking for improved ride quality and after much debate the drivability argument wins out. Don’t get me wrong I love the side exhaust and the whine but I wish I had more Whine and less exhaust. Since I have the Cervini side exhaust and love that look I can’t replace it. This along with what seems to be constant rattles coming and going I thought it makes sense to do it during the winter months and see if it helps. I am collecting the gear now and the first sign of salt being thrown on the roads I will heat the garage and start the gutting process.

I need something to do during the winter time that does not cost an arm and a leg and that I can do myself. Surely I can remove the front seats (disable airbags) rear seats and console without screwing something up.

DO IT!! You have enough power to overcome the weight. Dynomat works great and will much improve your quality of life in the car.

I have done dynamat in my cars. This mustang most of it has been done, everything except under the seats. My truck, I have done everything except the roof. Makes a huge difference on the road noise, rattles, and audio. The roof it the hardest to get to and make the most difference as far as wind noise goes. If you havent already purchased, ebay usually has pretty good deals on bulk packs delivered. The extreme is a little more, but dont know if it works any better than the original.

After you take apart mission critical components (i.e dishwasher) and can't get them reassembled you start to think that mechanical work should be left to professionals. The idea of climbing under my car and yanking off suspension parts puts me in a cold sweat. Even though they seem to be an easy "bolt on" the idea of having no back up kills the deal. This winter I am going to change my oil for the first time and do this Dynomat. If the car is still funtional then I can branch out. :)

Most likely going to start with this package and see how far it goes.

Yank out the seats and carpet and do the floor board, that would be my reccomendation, along with the front doors as well and rear decklid. Dyanamat all those, then put it all back together. I have taken many fords apart before, if youve done one youve done them all (for the most part). I can help guide you through it, and help you do it if you want. should only take a day to get it apart, dynamated and back together.

Post by KevinGT on November 26th 2008, 12:08 am

Sonic,

Thanks so much for the offer to help. I have been working on the gutting process tonight since the wife has the kitchen in full Thanksgiving battle dress. It is best to just go to the garage and stay out of the way. I have the seats out both front and back and will work on the trim tomorrow night.

The only questions I have is what kind of bolt is the seat belt anchor? I have to go to Norman in the morning and I dont know what to even ask for because I dont know the pattern or size of that bolt. I am also researching how to take the console out. I see a couple of screws in the bottom cubby hole but I havent really explored it this evening. I do know that there is carpet under there so it will have to come out. The dynamat will be delivered on Saturday so my goal is to be ready to go by then. So much for taking a couple of weeks to do it. I am going to do the entire hull from the gas pedal to the trunk key hole.

Probably a Hex head bolt......A parts store should have what you need. I would suggest taking a picture of it with you to Norman when looking for the socket.

Havent taken the car apart as much as you have....sorry I cant be of any more help.

I believe it is a torx bolt, at least most of my cars have been that. I have one down in my garage and could get you the size. I want to say a t-56, but I may be getting that confused with my transmission, lol!

By the way, you do not have to cover every inch of the car. You can space it out if you need to. I only put two sheets on my roof and it made a huge difference.

I think it is a torx bolt for the seat belt anchors - not sure what size, though. Console is really easy to remove - 1.) Remove trim ring around shifter opening (lift up gently); 2.) Open console lid; remove two Phillips-head screws at the rear under the hinge; 3.) Remove pad at bottom of console storage space, then remove the two nuts you see there; 4.) Set parking brake and remove console.

Yes you will need an assortment of Torx head bits. The seat belt is like T-50 or T-55 if my memory serves. I would get a pack of them if you can ranging from small to large. These come in quite handy more often than you would think.

I used a T47 and it seemed to work fine. Here are some pics of the progress. The picture showing the padding on the drivers side back quarter is something I want you guys to look at. That is directly above where the exhaust lets out so I wonder if I should add some there? There doesnt seem to be much between that padding and the hollow well of the frame down to the exhaust.

Grabber, I did put down a blanket to protect the paint because you mentioned that the seat was heavy. Sure enough I raked it over the lip on the way out of the car but was saved by the thick blanket. It wasnt the weight as much as the angle it requires to be lifted to to get out the door. The rest has been smooth once I bought the right tools.

I'd say go ahead and add some wherever you think you can while you have it apart and assuming that you have enough to go around. I think it will make a pretty parge difference in sound quality. Are you doing the trunk as well?

Re: Dynamat Extreme

Thanks David, My hope is that this will help tone down the exhaust a little. If it doesn’t do anything at all I have $300.00 invested so no big deal. I have read close to 50 reviews on the product and they are all 4 and 5 star reviews.

The trunk is stripped as well but it will be the last piece done. I don’t have any exhaust back there but the sub will be installed at some point. Once I took the seats out I realized that there is very little between the leather seats and the steel tub. A layer of thin foam is the only difference between my Jeep Wrangler and my Mustang and at times they can sound the same. I am excited to see how quiet I can get the cab. I dont plan on covering the engine bay because I still want to hear the whine.

Post by KevinGT on November 30th 2008, 8:34 pm

I am pretty close to finishing this project. I have done everything but the trunk and the passenger door. I started to wear down so I will do the rest next week. I am pretty happy with the results and can tell a difference as it sits now. My exhaust use to sound crappy with an exhaust and sheet metal vibration mix instead of a great rumble. Now all I hear is the exhaust and it sounds great. The door has made the biggest improvement in stereo sound. Since I only have one door done I can hear first hand the difference. The untreated door starts to rattle and bottom out when I turn the radio up and the treated door sounds great.

The other thing I notice is that when I drive over gravel I use to hear it hit the bottom. (drive way is gravel) and now I can only hear it in the trunk. This stuff is heavy but it seems to work. I went around knocking on different pieces and you can tell that the treated spots are solid and non treated sound like aluminum cans.

51 pounds was the box weight for shipping and I am going to use all if it. I was concerned that I would invest the time to do it and not be happy but the minute I picked up a piece of the Dynamat I knew by the weight that is was going to help. I felt like was laying lead plates. lol

Before the Dynomat I felt like I was driving with the window cracked just a little. That is gone thankfully.

Exactly, I am going to take a break now from the add ons and just drive it. I still have to design the layout out for the stealth audio and now that I have gutted the inside I might try doing some of it myself. These links really help explain things for someone that has no clue.

Hey Grabber,

I finished the install and everything went as planned. I think the difference is noticeable. The only two sounds I have are exhaust and whine and that is how I wanted it. I ordered the mega pack for 300 bucks and that covered just about everything. I was maybe one or two sheets short of finishing the trunk so I did some patches to get coverage.

My Friend who has the stage 3 said is was like night and day. He had a friend trying to make a business call and he couldn't hear anything. Since I have bluetooth and a mic in the cab I enjoy using the intercom to make calls again.

If you ever get the urge to do it let me know. Two guys could knock this out in a 3 or 4 hours and have the car back together in no time. In your case I would double up on the trunk and single layers in the cab. I did the opposite and double up'd on the sheet metal right above the side exhaust inside the cab.
