question about CAI and programming

Post by fishpig on January 15th 2009, 10:57 am

i've been pricing a CAI package and had a question regarding the programmer. it seems that the programmer costs at least as much as the CAI parts and i was wondering why you couldn't use someone else's programmer with your tune. i know its good to have your own but if you're not planning on re-tuning a bunch why not just use somebody's? is the tuner somehow linked to your vehicle?

Tuners are specific to a certain engine code. Under your hood on your PCM you will find a series of numbers and letters...thats your specific engine code and is important when making a tune for your car.

Once you program your car with a tuner..it is (Locked). No other vehicles can be tuned with this tuner while you have the tune on your car.

If you go back to "Stock" mode...this unlocks the tuner and the tuner can be used on another vehicle.

This other vehicle can use your tune IF they have the same engine code and performance parts.

Hope this makes sense....keeps people form buying one tuner and tuning multiple cars.

and its locked because my stock tune is held on the tuner and the tune on my car is sort of 'checked out' to my car.

either way i think i get it... sounds as if i need to buy a tuner with the CAI kit :-/

Seems to me you could get the CAI installed and the car tuned at some speed shop for the same price for you to do it yourself....

check out brenspeed, they have tuner/air kit packages, saves you money.

http://www.brenspeed.com/

And greg will laugh at you if you bring up cold air. lol he hates that word, cause its technically not "COLD". good guy though. its just an inside joke. lol!

brenspeed is good, but i prefer www.bamachips.com if you're going with a mail order tune. brenspeed will only (to my knowledge) update your tune for free if you get the parts from them. bama will do it no matter where you buy the parts from. plus doug is just awesome, but since you have archangel there in town you could just go there if he will give you the same price for the tuner, "cai", and 3 tunes.

Yes but as you add more and more performance parts...the car must be retuned. Brenspeed and Bamachips have perfected the art of email tunes through testing hundreds of different combinations. As you add parts to your car you can call them up and get a new tune for free

Whereas through a dynotune you have to pay for yet another dyno tuning session each time.....which can get costly.

The Tuner can also read check engine light codes and allow you to make minor fuel and timeing changes yourself through the RPM range.

Pretty slick

Doug is a great guy. But Brent at Brenspeed is the champ too. Both of these companies are very good. My best et comes from a mail order brenspeed 91 tune. You really cant go wrong here. Plus as far as the parts purchase thing to update your tune brenspeed has very competitive pricing on most everything. THey also have a selection of used parts if you call them.
